Introduction to Predictive Processing
Your Brain the Fortune Teller
Your brain doesn't just sit around waiting for information to arrive from your eyes and ears. Instead, it’s constantly trying to guess what will happen next. It acts like a fortune teller, building a model of the world based on all your past experiences and using it to make predictions about the future, even a few milliseconds from now.
Think about walking down a familiar staircase in the dark. You don't consciously think about each step, but your brain anticipates where the next one will be. It predicts the height, the depth, and the feeling of your foot landing. This constant stream of predictions is what allows us to navigate the world so smoothly.

This framework suggests that what we perceive isn't just a direct pipeline of sensory data. It's a combination of the brain's best guess (the prediction) and the actual information coming in. Most of the time, these predictions are so good that we don't even notice them happening. When your brain predicts the feel of the next step and is correct, the action feels effortless.
The Importance of Being Wrong
But what happens when the brain's prediction is wrong? Imagine you reach what you thought was the bottom of that staircase, but there's one more step. That jolt of surprise is more than just a feeling—it's a crucial signal called a prediction error.
A prediction error is the mismatch between what the brain expects and what the senses actually report. It’s the engine of learning.
This error signal travels up from the lower levels of the brain that process raw sensory data to the higher levels that made the initial prediction. It essentially tells the higher levels, "Your model of the world was wrong in this instance. Time for an update."
This process is fundamental to cognition. The brain is constantly trying to minimize prediction errors. When an error occurs, the brain has two main options:

By continuously generating predictions and updating them based on errors, the brain creates an efficient and adaptable model of reality. This allows us to understand language in a noisy room, catch a fast-moving ball, and learn from our mistakes.
Predictive processing casts the brain as a ‘prediction engine’ – something that’s constantly attempting to predict the sensory signals it encounters in the world, and to minimise the discrepancy (called the ‘prediction error’) between those predictions and the incoming signal.
This constant cycle of predicting and correcting is at the heart of how we perceive, learn, and interact with our surroundings.
