The Spark: A Bold Promise
To understand why Apollo 11 was such a massive deal, we have to travel back to May 1961. At that point, the United States was locked in the with the Soviet Union, and they were losing the "space race." The Soviets had already put the first artificial satellite, Sputnik, and the first human, Yuri Gagarin, into space.
Reacting to this pressure, President stood before Congress and made a wild, almost sci-fi promise: the United States would land a man on the Moon and return him safely to the Earth before the decade was out.
When he made this speech, the U.S. had only accumulated a grand total of about 15 minutes of human flight time in space. It was like promising to climb Mount Everest when you have only just learned how to walk around the block.
