At its core, music theory is simply the language we use to understand, describe, and communicate how music works. Just like learning to speak a new language, we start with the absolute basic building blocks before we try to write a masterpiece.

Now that we have our 12 notes, let's see where they actually live! The absolute best way to visualize these notes is on a standard , which acts as a perfect physical map of music theory.

Take a look at how the keys are arranged. You will see a repeating pattern of white keys and black keys.
The white keys are our basic letter notes: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G.
The black keys are grouped in repeating patterns of twos and threes. These black keys represent our five in-between notes (the sharps and flats).
Notice that there are two places on the keyboard where there is no black key separating the white keys: between B and C, and between E and F. In music theory, these notes are naturally only a half-step apart, meaning they are immediate neighbors with no room for a sharp or flat in between!
