Hacking Your Memory

Our brains are pattern-making machines. We're great at remembering stories, faces, and places, but we often struggle with abstract information like numbers or lists of names. The trick to remembering these things is to translate them into a language your brain understands better: the language of images and associations.

This is the core idea behind mnemonic devices. They aren't magic; they're just clever ways to convert hard-to-remember facts into memorable pictures, phrases, or stories. Instead of trying to brute-force a string of numbers into your memory, you can turn it into a silly sentence. Instead of forgetting a name moments after you hear it, you can link it to a funny image of the person's face.

The fundamental rule is to connect what you want to remember with something you already know and can easily visualize.

Turning Numbers into Words

Numbers are notoriously difficult to memorize because they are completely abstract. What does "7" look like? What does it feel like? To get around this, we can use a system to convert numbers into words, which are much easier to picture.

One of the most powerful methods for this is the Major System. It works by linking each digit from 0 to 9 with a specific consonant sound. Once you learn these pairings, you can transform any number into a series of sounds, and then fill in vowels to create words.

Let's try an example. Take the number 32. The digit 3 corresponds to the 'm' sound, and 2 corresponds to the 'n' sound. We have the sounds M-N. We can insert vowels to form words like "man," "men," "moon," or "moan." The word "moon" is easy to visualize.

To remember a longer number like 140, we get the sounds T/D - R - S/Z. We could form the word "tears" or "doors." To remember the first few digits of pi (3.1415), we could create a sentence. 3=M, 1=T, 4=R, 1=T, 5=L. This could become "My Turtle Tail."

An earlier version of this concept was the Herigone Method, developed in the 17th century. It assigned letters directly to numbers, which is a bit less flexible than the sound-based Major System.

Using the Herigone Method, the number 32 might become "ed" or "fa." Because the Major System is based on sounds, a single number sequence can generate more word options, making it easier to create memorable images.

Remembering Names

Forgetting someone's name right after meeting them is a common experience. The problem is that a name is just a random piece of data until we connect it to something meaningful. The technique for remembering names is similar to the one for numbers: turn the name into a picture and link it to the person.

First, listen carefully to the name. Then, try to find a word or phrase that sounds like it. For a simple name like Baker, you can picture the person wearing a chef's hat and holding a loaf of bread. For a more abstract name, you might need to get creative. The name "Harrison" could become "hairy son."

Next, you need to anchor that image to a distinctive feature on the person's face. Does Mr. Baker have a prominent nose? Picture a tiny baker pulling bread out of a nostril-oven. Does Harrison have bushy eyebrows? Picture his hairy son swinging from them like vines.

The sillier and more exaggerated the image, the better. Your brain is wired to remember things that are unusual and surprising. A boring image will be forgotten, but a bizarre one will stick.
