Addition of 245 and 138 shown using base-10 blocks, with 10 ones regrouped into 1 tens rod.
We can think of (or carrying) as gathering up 10 smaller blocks and trading them in for 1 larger block.
When you add the 5 ones and 8 ones, you get 13 ones. If you take 10 of those ones and trade them for a single ten-rod, you're left with 3 ones and an extra ten to add to the tens column.
