Present continuous
Welcome! I'm thrilled to help you master this essential part of English. Before we dive into the grammar, I'd love to know a bit more about you so we can make this session as practical and fun as possible.
Could you tell me a little bit about your current level of English and why you're interested in learning the Present Continuous tense?
I'm intermediate but I get confused between different tenses.
It is completely normal to mix up English tenses at the intermediate level! The secret is focusing on the "why" behind each tense rather than just memorizing formulas.
What is the Present Continuous?
Continue to the formula: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
You've got it. That formula—Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing—is the backbone of this tense, and since you are at an intermediate level, you probably recognize it instantly.
But let's look at how we actually use it in natural, daily conversation. It helps to think of the as a way to talk about things that are temporary or actively in progress right now. For example:
- "I am studying grammar now."
- "I am currently working on improving my tenses."
In both cases, we aren't talking about a permanent, unchanging habit. We are talking about something dynamic that is happening in your life around this moment, but has a beginning and an end.
To make sure this feels completely natural before we start changing the structure into negatives or questions, how would you describe what you are doing in your life this week using this formula?
