The Four Core Sections
To conquer the IELTS, we first need to understand the battlefield. The exam is divided into four core sections that test different facets of your English communication skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
| Section | Timing | What is Evaluated? |
|---|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 minutes | Understanding spoken English in academic and social contexts |
| Reading | 60 minutes | Comprehending complex, authentic texts |
| Writing | 60 minutes | Presenting clear arguments and describing visual data |
| Speaking | 11–14 minutes | Interactive, real-time conversation face-to-face |
The entire exam takes about 2 hours and 45 minutes. On test day, you will take the , Reading, and Writing sections back-to-back without any breaks, while the Speaking test may be scheduled on the same day or slightly apart.
