Introduction to Co-Active Coaching

A Partnership in Action

Co-Active Coaching is built on the idea of a partnership. The name itself tells the story. The "Co-" stands for collaboration, connection, and relationship. The coach and client are equals, working together in an alliance. The "Active" part points to action, direction, and results. It's about moving forward and creating change.

This model, developed by the Co-Active Training Institute (CTI), views coaching as a dynamic process. It isn't about an expert telling a client what to do. Instead, it’s a shared journey where the coach helps the client uncover their own answers and potential.

Creative, Resourceful, and Whole

The entire Co-Active model rests on one fundamental belief: clients are naturally creative, resourceful, and whole. This means every person already has the capacity to find their own answers and solve their own problems.

They aren't broken and don't need fixing. A coach's role isn't to provide solutions from the outside, but to help the client tap into the wisdom they already possess. Think of it like a gardener. A gardener doesn't force a seed to grow. They create the right conditions—good soil, water, and sunlight—so the seed can sprout and flourish on its own.

In Co-Active coaching, the client is seen as the expert on their own life. The coach provides the framework to help that expertise shine through.

The Four Cornerstones

To create the right environment for this partnership, the Co-Active model is supported by four key principles, often called cornerstones. They form the foundation of every coaching interaction.

These four principles guide the coach's mindset and behavior, ensuring every session is collaborative, present-focused, and geared toward the client’s growth. They are the pillars that uphold the entire Co-Active philosophy.
