The Idea of Repeated Addition

At its absolute core, multiplication is just a shortcut for adding the same number over and over again. Instead of writing out a long chain of addition, we use multiplication as a math shorthand.

For example, let's say you have some bags of apples. If you have 3 bags, and every single bag contains 5 apples, how would you find the total?

You could write it out as addition:

$5 + 5 + 5 = 15$

Because you are adding the number 5 exactly 3 times, we can write this more simply as:

$3 \times 5 = 15$

This literally translates to "three groups of five." Both paths lead us to 15, but the multiplication shortcut is much cleaner!
