Introduction to n8n

What is n8n?

Think of all the repetitive tasks you do every day. Maybe you save email attachments to a cloud drive, copy data from a form into a spreadsheet, or post social media updates across different platforms. Each task is simple, but together they take up a lot of time.

n8n is a tool that automates these tasks for you. It acts as a bridge between your different apps and services, allowing them to talk to each other and perform actions automatically. This is called workflow automation.

The core idea is to create automated sequences, or “workflows,” that run in the background, saving you time and effort.

Unlike traditional programming, n8n uses a visual interface. You don’t need to be a developer to connect your apps. Instead, you build automations by connecting blocks, much like building with LEGOs. This makes it a “low-code” platform, accessible to everyone regardless of their technical background.

The Visual Editor

The heart of n8n is its visual editor, where you build your automations. These automations are called workflows, and they are made up of individual steps called nodes.

Every workflow starts with a specific kind of node.

Node

noun

A single building block in a workflow that performs one specific task, like reading data, sending an email, or filtering information.

There are two main types of nodes:

  1. Trigger Nodes: These kick off a workflow. A trigger waits for a specific event to happen, like receiving a new message in Slack or a customer submitting a form. Once the event occurs, the workflow starts running.

  2. Action Nodes: These perform a task. After a workflow is triggered, action nodes do the work, such as adding a new contact to your CRM, sending a customized email, or creating a task in your project management tool.

You connect these nodes together to create a sequence of events. The data flows from one node to the next, allowing you to build complex automations step-by-step.

How n8n Compares

Several tools exist for workflow automation, like Zapier and Make. While they all help connect apps, n8n has a few key differences that make it stand out.

The biggest distinction is that n8n is open-source and can be self-hosted. This means you can run it on your own servers, giving you complete control over your data, privacy, and costs. Other platforms are typically cloud-based services where your data passes through their systems.

This also gives n8n incredible flexibility. While it's easy to start with the visual editor, you can also write custom code or create your own nodes if you need to build something highly specific. This makes it powerful for both beginners and advanced users.

Featuren8nOther Tools (e.g., Zapier)
HostingSelf-hosted or CloudCloud-only
CostFree (self-hosted) or paid plansTiered subscription plans
CustomizationHighly flexible, can add custom codeLimited to available apps and features
Data PrivacyFull control over your dataData is processed on third-party servers
ComplexityCan handle simple to very complex workflowsBest for simple to moderate workflows

Because of its flexibility and open-source nature, n8n is a great choice for those who want more power and control over their automations without being locked into a specific vendor's ecosystem.

Now, let's check your understanding of these core concepts.
