The Secret to Starting: Repeated Addition

When introducing multiplication to kids, we want to anchor it to something they already know really well: addition. Instead of jumping straight to memorization, we can show them that multiplication is just a faster, lazier way of doing .
For example, imagine we have three boxes, and each box has two toys inside. To find the total, a child's instinct is to add: 2+2+2=62 + 2 + 2 = 6 Multiplication is just the math shortcut for this exact action. It allows us to say "we have three groups of two" and write it simply as: 3×2=63 \times 2 = 6

I've started creating an interactive visual to help demonstrate this concept. Notice how we are simply grouping the same number together multiple times.

How do I explain this with a physical game?

An excellent and highly interactive way to teach this is with a physical game called "." It takes the concept right off the worksheet and puts it into their hands, which is incredibly powerful for young learners.

To play, you grab a few paper plates and some plastic coins, buttons, or dry cereal pieces.

You give the child a scenario: "Put out 4 plates. Now, put exactly 3 coins on every single plate."

Once they set it up, you ask them to write down what they see as an addition equation:

3+3+3+3=123 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 12

Then, you show them the magic shortcut. You count the number of plates (4 groups) and the coins on each plate (3), and write the multiplication equation right underneath:

4×3=124 \times 3 = 12

I have updated our diagram above to show how this "plates and coins" setup perfectly mirrors our math equations. It helps kids visually connect the concept of "groups" to the first number in our multiplication problem.
