Your Foundation on the Track

Having a few recreational races under your belt is the perfect starting point. The absolute first thing we need to fix is how you sit in the kart, because your body weight acts as a major tuning tool. When you are racing, you want to resist the urge to lean forward or hunch over the wheel. It feels natural because you want to go fast, but it actually takes weight off the rear tires, making the kart unstable and slidey.

Instead, push your back firmly against the seat. By sitting all the way back, you lock your body in place and transfer your closer to the rear axle. This gives the rear tires much more grip, which keeps the kart planted firmly in the corners instead of sliding around. Think of yourself as part of the kart's chassis, rather than just a passenger riding on top of it.

Now that you are locked firmly into the seat, let's talk about where your hands go on the wheel. Many recreational drivers treat a go-kart like a normal road car, shuffling their hands around or letting the wheel slide through their palms, but that's a quick way to lose control. On the track, your hands should stay glued to the positions at all times.

Keeping a symmetrical, solid grip is crucial because karts don't have power steering. You need all the mechanical advantage you can get. If you move your hands around, you lose your physical reference for where 'straight ahead' is, which makes correcting a slide almost impossible. Think of your hands as being welded to the wheel; even in the tightest corners, you won't need to shuffle them if you turn with your shoulders. It is the golden rule of motorsport: smooth is fast. When you are watching racers fly around a track, it looks incredibly aggressive, but inside the cockpit, the best drivers are and precise with their inputs.

Every time you yank the steering wheel quickly or jerk the pedals, you break the tires' traction with the track. Because go-karts do not have suspension, sudden movements cause the chassis to bounce and the tires to slide, which instantly kills your engine's and slows you down.

Think of the steering wheel as being connected to a bucket of water on your lap; you want to turn so smoothly that not a single drop spills. When you enter a corner, turn the wheel with a single, continuous motion rather than sawing back and forth. By keeping your inputs gentle, you preserve your momentum and carry much more speed straight through the turn.

Why does sliding make me slower if it feels fast?

It is one of the most deceptive feelings in racing: sliding sideways makes you feel like you are absolutely flying, but the stopwatch never lies, and it will show you are actually losing time.

When you slide a go-kart, you are sliding the rubber tires sideways across the asphalt. This causes the tires to break traction, which converts your forward momentum into wasted heat and friction. Even worse, recreational karts are powered by small, engines. These engines rely heavily on keeping your engine speed, or RPMs, in a very specific power band to accelerate.

When your tires slide, they act like a massive brake on the engine. Your RPMs instantly plummet, dragging the engine out of its happy power zone. Because these karts have very low horsepower, once the engine bogs down, it takes a painful amount of time to build that engine speed back up. You might feel like you are drifting like a action movie star, but a driver who kept their tires tracking in a straight line will easily rocket past you on the straightaway.
