How to divide fractions

It is completely normal for fraction division to feel a bit backwards at first, but once you see how it works visually, the math becomes much more intuitive!

Before we jump into the numbers, I would love to hear what you are working toward. Are you brushing up on this for a school class, prepping for an upcoming exam, or just wanting to master it for your own curiosity?

I'm studying for a class or test.

Since you are preparing for a test, let's start by looking at what division actually means before we dive into the calculations.

When we divide normal whole numbers, like 10÷210 \div 2, we are really asking a simple question: "How many groups of 22 can fit inside 1010?" Since five groups of 22 make up 1010, the answer is 55.

We do the exact same thing when we divide fractions. If we look at the problem 2÷122 \div \frac{1}{2}, we are simply asking, "How many halves can fit inside two wholes?"

I have started generating a diagram to help you see this visually.

If you have two whole candy bars and cut each one in half, you end up with four half-sized pieces. Because four halves fit perfectly into two wholes, 2÷12=42 \div \frac{1}{2} = 4.

Before we move on to dividing a fraction by another fraction, does this way of thinking about division make sense?
