How an Airplane Flies

An aircraft in flight is a balancing act. Four forces are constantly at play, pushing and pulling on the airplane. When these forces are in equilibrium, the plane can maintain straight and level flight.

Here’s the breakdown:

  • Thrust is the forward force produced by the engine and propeller.
  • Drag is the backward force caused by air resistance.
  • Weight is the downward force of gravity pulling the aircraft down.
  • Lift is the upward force that opposes weight and holds the aircraft in the air.

Thrust counteracts drag, and lift counteracts weight. The key to flight is generating enough lift. This is accomplished by the shape of the wings, which are also known as airfoils.

Because of the curved upper surface, air flows faster over the top of the wing than it does underneath. According to Bernoulli's principle, faster-moving air exerts less pressure. This pressure difference, with higher pressure below and lower pressure above, creates an upward force: lift.

The Parts of a Plane

While aircraft come in many shapes and sizes, most share the same fundamental components. Each part has a specific job to do, from housing passengers to controlling the plane's movement.

The most important parts for controlling the aircraft are the movable surfaces on the wings and tail called ailerons, elevators, and the rudder. These allow the pilot to control the aircraft's movement around three axes of rotation.

Speaking the Language

Like any specialized field, aviation has its own vocabulary. Understanding a few key terms is essential for grasping the fundamentals of flight.

Attitude

The orientation of the aircraft in relation to the Earth's horizon. It involves the aircraft's pitch (nose up or down) and roll or bank (wings tilted left or right).

An airplane can move in three ways through the air: pitching, rolling, and yawing. Each movement is controlled by a specific flight surface.

A common mantra for pilots, especially in stressful situations, is "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate." It prioritizes the most critical tasks: first, fly the airplane; second, know where you are and where you are going; and third, talk to air traffic control.

The speed of an aircraft relative to the air it is flying through. This is different from groundspeed, which is its speed relative to the ground.
