The Secret of the Floating Decimal

It's awesome that you already have experience with long division! Since you're looking to build up your speed and confidence, let's start with a quick warm-up on dividing a decimal by a whole number, like 4.8÷24.8 \div 2.

When the is a whole number, the decimal point in the simply floats straight up into the quotient directly above its original spot.

Once that decimal point floats straight up, you can ignore it and divide the numbers exactly like you're doing normal long division with whole numbers.

So, 4.8÷24.8 \div 2 becomes a simple matter of dividing 44 by 22, and then 88 by 22, giving us our final answer of 2.42.4.
