The Anatomy of a Perfect Beginner Card

To learn Chinese effectively, a standard two-sided card isn't quite enough. Because Mandarin uses both unique written characters and a distinct sound system, your brain needs three key pieces of information organized in a very specific way. On the Front, you should only have the itself. This forces your brain to try to recognize the visual form without any hints. On the Back, you need three things:
  1. The Pinyin (to know how to say it)
  2. The Meaning (to know what it is)
  3. A Tonal Clue or Audio context (to get the pronunciation right)
