How YouTube Monetization Works

Starting a gaming channel from scratch is an awesome adventure. When most people think about making money on YouTube, they immediately think of those ads that play before or during a video. That ad revenue is powered by Google , but it is actually only one piece of a much larger puzzle.
To earn money directly from YouTube, you need to join the YouTube Partner Program, or for short. Think of the YPP as a VIP club: once you meet their entry requirements, YouTube unlocks built-in features that let you collect money directly from your viewers and advertisers.
Because you are building a gaming channel, you will have two distinct ways to make money directly through YouTube:
  1. Ad Revenue: This is passive income. YouTube places ads on your videos and pays you a cut of what advertisers spent to be there.
  2. Fan Funding: This is active support. Viewers can buy "Super Chats" during your live streams, send you a "Super Thanks" on your edited videos, or pay a monthly fee to join your Channel Memberships for special perks like custom emojis.
While you are building your channel up to qualify for these official programs, you can also make money through third-party methods like affiliate marketing (for example, putting links to your favorite gaming headset in your video description and earning a commission when someone buys it).
