We are going to start our journey with self-working magic, which will let you perform an mind-boggling trick right away without needing to spend weeks practicing finger coordination. Once you feel comfortable with how a trick is structured, we will transition into basic sleight of hand.

Basic Sleight of Hand

To kick off our first subtopic, I want to teach you a classic self-working miracle called the Face-Up Bottom Card Reveal. It is a sneaky mind-reading effect where a spectator's chosen card magically flips itself upside down in the middle of the deck while your back is turned. To make this work, there is a tiny bit of secret preparation you have to do before the audience even sees the deck.

To pull off this miracle, you will need to do a little bit of secret prep before you even say a word to your audience. This is what magicians call a .

While nobody is looking, take your deck of cards and secretly turn the very bottom card so it is face up. The rest of the deck should remain face down. Now, from the top, your deck looks completely normal. But if you were to look at the very bottom, you would see one single card staring back up at you. That single reversed card is your secret weapon.

Now that you have your secret setup ready, it is time to have your spectator choose a card. This is where you have to be careful: since that bottom card is secretly face up, you cannot just sloppily spread all the cards out, or they will spot the reversed card and the magic will be ruined before you even start.

To do this safely, hold the deck in your hand and gently push the cards from left to right, spreading out only the top and middle sections of the deck for them to choose from. Keep the bottom third of the deck squared up tightly in your hand so that the reversed bottom card stays completely hidden out of sight.

Once they pull a card out, instruct them to look at it and show it to anyone else in the room. This moment is crucial because it gives you the perfect opportunity to perform a classic magic concept: . While their eyes are glued to their selected card, you are going to execute a secret move right in plain sight.

While your spectator is completely focused on memorizing their card, you are going to execute the secret move. This is the moment where we exploit that window of intense focus to do something sneaky right in front of them.

The Secret Flip

While they are looking at their card, casually let your hands drop to your side or just relax them in front of you. In one fluid, natural motion, you are going to turn the entire deck upside down in your hand. Because of your , the single reversed card is now on the very top, facing down. To the spectator, the deck looks exactly the same as it did a moment ago. But in reality, the entire deck beneath that top card is now secretly face up.
