Great patter does two major jobs: it entertains your audience, and more importantly, it provides misdirection. By keeping viewers focused on your words and the narrative, their attention stays far away from whatever secret setup or movement you're making with your hands.

Can you give an example of good patter?

Imagine holding the deck while saying: "Notice how every single card here is facing down? I'm going to put the deck behind my back and flip one card using only my sense of touch."

While they are looking at their chosen card, you secretly turn the deck upside down in your hands. Because you pre-flipped the bottom card earlier, the deck now looks totally normal from the top—even though every other card underneath is actually face-up!

Your patter misdirects their attention completely. They think you're performing an amazing feat of finger sensitivity behind your back, but your words are actually hiding the simple setup you prepared beforehand.

To pull off that effect, you need a quick setup before you even walk up to your audience. Turn the bottom card of your deck face-up so that it faces the opposite direction from every other card.
