I've generated a study guide summarizing those core card magic concepts for you!
Now, let's talk about the verbal side of performance: . Patter is the script, story, or conversation you share with your audience while performing a trick.
Great patter does two major jobs: it entertains your audience, and more importantly, it provides misdirection. By keeping viewers focused on your words and the narrative, their attention stays far away from whatever secret setup or movement you're making with your hands.
Can you give an example of good patter?
Imagine holding the deck while saying: "Notice how every single card here is facing down? I'm going to put the deck behind my back and flip one card using only my sense of touch."
Your patter misdirects their attention completely. They think you're performing an amazing feat of finger sensitivity behind your back, but your words are actually hiding the simple setup you prepared beforehand.
Continue to the bottom-card setup
A vertical side-view stack of 52 playing cards where the top 51 cards show their blue patterned backs and the single bottom card is flipped face-up showing the Seven of Spades.
That simple secret setup sets you up for the magic moment. Ready to walk through the steps of performing the full trick?
