Let's dive right into the blueprint of all these spoken sounds: the (or IPA).

To make sense of the IPA, think of it as a geographic map for your mouth. Every symbol tells your tongue, lips, and vocal cords exactly where to go and what to do.

For standard British English (SSBE), we use a specific subset of this map. Let's see how this works by comparing a standard spelling to its precise, one-to-one phonemic representation.

Take the word "cat".

In traditional spelling, "cat" has three letters. In phonemic transcription, we represent its exact sounds inside forward slashes like this:

/kæt//k\text{æ}t/

Notice how we used the symbol /k/ instead of the letter "c". In phonemic transcription, the letter "c" doesn't actually exist because it doesn't make a unique sound on its own—it either sounds like a /k/ (as in "cat") or an /s/ (as in "cell").

By sticking to this strict "one symbol for one sound" rule, we strip away all the confusion of spelling.
