KoboToolbox is a suite of free, open-source tools for collecting and managing data. It's especially popular in humanitarian work, research, and environmental monitoring because it’s designed to work well even in tough situations, like areas with no internet access. Think of it as a complete system for creating a survey, gathering responses on a mobile device, and storing the data securely online.

KoboToolbox is built on three key parts that work together seamlessly. Understanding how they connect is the first step to using the platform effectively.

1. Form Builder This is where you create your surveys, questionnaires, or data entry forms. It's a web-based tool with a simple, visual interface. You can add different types of questions, like text, numbers, multiple choice, photos, GPS locations, and more. You don't need to know how to code; you just drag and drop the elements you need.

2. KoboCollect KoboCollect is an Android app that you use to collect data in the field. After you design a form in the Form Builder, you load it onto the app. The biggest advantage of KoboCollect is that it works offline. You can collect data all day without an internet connection, and then upload all your submissions to the server once you're back online.

3. KoboToolbox Server This is the central hub for all your projects and data. When you upload data from the KoboCollect app, it's sent here. On the server, you can view your collected data in a table, manage your projects, and control who has access to them. It's the secure online home for all the information you gather.

Creating an account is straightforward. KoboToolbox offers two main public servers. For most users, the choice is simple.

To get started, navigate to the KoboToolbox website and look for the account creation page. You'll need to fill out a simple form with your name, email, and a password. Once you confirm your email, you're ready to log in.

When you first log in, you'll see your dashboard. This is your main control panel for all your data collection activities. It might look empty at first, but it will fill up as you create projects.

The main screen shows a list of your projects. You can see deployed projects (active and ready for data collection) and draft projects (still in the design phase).

A prominent 'New' button lets you start a new project from scratch. You'll also find a 'Library' section. This is where you can store questions or entire forms that you plan to reuse across different projects, which saves a lot of time.

The user settings and account information are typically found in the top right corner. Take a moment to click around and get a feel for the layout. The interface is designed to be clean and functional, helping you focus on your data.
