spanish
Welcome! I'm so excited to help you start your Spanish journey. Learning a new language is an incredible adventure, and we'll take it one step at a time.
To help me tailor our lessons and find the perfect pace for you, could you tell me a little bit about why you want to learn Spanish and if you have any prior experience with the language?
I'm just learning for fun and personal growth.
That is wonderful! Learning for personal growth is one of the most rewarding ways to pick up a language because there is absolutely no pressure. We can go at whatever pace feels most comfortable for you.
Since you are starting completely fresh, we will begin with our very first subtopic: Getting Started with Basic Greetings and Introductions.
Before we dive into the actual phrases, I have a quick question to help me tailor our practice: when you think about practicing speaking, what sounds most fun to you?
I am not completely fresh. I understand when they speak in Spanish and know 80% when I read
That makes total sense, and honestly, it is a very common spot to be in! Many learners find that their passive skills (reading and listening) develop much faster than their active skills (speaking and constructing sentences on the fly). Since you already understand so much, we can skip the standard "beginner" grammar drills entirely and focus on putting that knowledge into action.
To make sure our sessions are highly valuable for you, where should we channel this energy? We can treat our time as a speaking-focused sandbox, zoom in on refining your grammar so you feel more confident putting sentences together, or use conversational reading to rapidly expand your vocabulary.
Focus on speaking practice and natural flow
It is completely normal to understand plenty of Spanish while reading or listening, yet feel like your mind goes entirely blank the second you open your mouth to speak! Since you want to focus on speaking practice and natural flow, we are going to dive straight into the tricks native speakers use to keep a conversation moving effortlessly.
To kick off our journey of refining your conversational flow, let's look at the exact question we'll use to tailor our focus today.
Since you already understand quite a bit, that's fantastic! To help us skip the basics and focus on what you really need, would you prefer to focus on speaking practice, refining your grammar, or expanding your vocabulary through conversation?
Focus on speaking practice and natural flow
Let's get right into the secret weapons of natural flow! When native speakers need a moment to gather their thoughts, they don't just stand there in silent panic. Instead, they use little bridge words called to keep the rhythm going smoothly.
In English, we constantly say "like," "um," or "well..." to buy our brains some processing time.
In Spanish, relying on English sounds like "uhhh" acts like a giant speed bump for your brain, because it pulls you right back into English mode.
Instead, we want to replace those with Spanish equivalents. Let's start with three incredibly versatile ones:
| English Equivalent | Spanish Filler | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| "Let's see..." / "Well..." | Pues... | Great to start a sentence or buy a second to think. |
| "I mean..." / "That is..." | O sea... | Perfect when you want to clarify or rephrase something. |
| "Look..." | A ver... | Literally "to see", used when you are actively searching for an answer. |
Just sprinkling these three into your sentences will instantly make you sound less like a translation app and more like a real person having a conversation.
Let's try putting this into practice right away. How would you say "Well... I speak a little Spanish" using one of our new fillers?
