What Exactly is Psychology?

To kick off our journey, let's start with a clear definition. Today, is formally defined as the scientific study of behavior and mental processes.
This definition has two crucial parts that help us understand how psychologists actually study the mind:
  1. Behavior: This is anything an organism does that we can physically observe and record. It includes outward actions like smiling, talking, typing, or even the physiological changes we can measure, like a spiking heart rate.
  2. Mental Processes: These are our internal, subjective experiences. Think of things like your thoughts, memories, dreams, and feelings. Because we can't see these directly, we have to find clever, indirect ways to study them.
To make this concrete, imagine you are looking at someone who is laughing. The physical laughter, the crinkling of their eyes, and the sound they make are the behaviors. The joy they are feeling inside, the memory of the joke they just heard, and their brain processing the humor are the mental processes.
