What is Neuroscience?

At its simplest, is the scientific study of the brain and the entire nervous system. It is an incredibly vast field that sits at the crossroads of biology, chemistry, psychology, and even computer science.
Think of your nervous system as the ultimate biological supercomputer. Your brain is the central processor, and the nerves running through your body are the fiber-optic cables transmitting data. Neuroscience is simply our attempt to open up the hood, look at the circuitry, and figure out how it all works to generate your thoughts, memories, emotions, and physical movements.

As the diagram shows, neuroscience splits this vast communication network into two main branches: the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). The acts as the core command center, consisting of your brain and spinal cord. It does the heavy lifting of processing information, making decisions, and storing memories. Every thought you have and choice you make happens right there. The , on the other hand, consists of all the nerves that branch out from your spinal cord to the rest of your body, reaching your fingertips, toes, and organs. If the CNS is the central computer, the PNS is the network of cables carrying data back and forth to keep you in sync with the world.
