What is BIM and Why Does It Matter?

To understand Revit, we first have to talk about , or BIM. If you have ever seen old-school blueprints, those are traditional CAD (Computer-Aided Design) drawings. In CAD, you are essentially drawing flat, disconnected 2D lines—a line for a wall, a circle for a swing door. If you decide to move a window in a CAD floor plan, you have to manually go into the elevation drawings, the section cuts, and the material schedules to update that window in every single view. It is tedious and incredibly easy to make mistakes. Revit does not work with flat lines. Instead, you build a virtual 3D digital model of the house. Inside this model, elements are —meaning they are smart objects with built-in rules. When you place a "wall" in Revit, the software knows it has a physical height, width, and material composition. If you cut a section view through your living room, the wall is automatically drawn there because it is a real 3D object in space. If you delete a window in a 3D view, it instantly disappears from your floor plans, elevations, and budget sheets. In fact, the name Revit actually comes from a contraction of "Revise Instantly"!
