Letters Working Together
Some letters are best friends! When they stand next to each other in a word, they hold hands and make one brand new sound. We call these special letter teams phonograms.
Think of it like mixing colors. Yellow and blue make green. Letters can do that too! Let's meet some of these friendly letter teams.
The 'sh' Sound
When you see the letters 's' and 'h' together, they make a quiet sound. It's the sound you make when you want someone to be quiet.
Shhhhh! Like in the words ship, shop, and fish.
The 'ch' Sound
Next, let's look at 'c' and 'h'. When they team up, they make a sound like a train starting to move. Choo-choo!
Ch-ch-ch! You can hear this sound in words like chin, chop, and lunch.
The 'th' Sound
Our last team for today is 't' and 'h'. This one is a little tricky because it can make two sounds! Sometimes it's a soft, buzzy sound, and sometimes it's a quiet, airy sound. You make it by sticking your tongue out just a little bit between your teeth.
