Instagram Basics

Setting Up Your Profile

Instagram is a social media platform built around sharing photos and videos. It’s a place to connect with friends, follow interests, and share moments from your life. The first step is creating an account and setting up a profile that tells people who you are.

Once you've created your account, it's time to build your profile. This is the first thing people see when they visit your page, so you want to make a good impression. There are three key parts to focus on:

  1. Profile Picture: Choose a clear, high-quality photo. If it's a personal account, a picture of your face works best. For a business or brand, use your logo.
  2. Username: This is your unique handle on Instagram, starting with an "@". Make it memorable and easy for others to find.
  3. Bio: You have 150 characters to describe yourself or your brand. Be clear and concise. You can also add a link to your website or another social profile.

Your Instagram profile is the digital face of your business.

Finding Your Way Around

The Instagram app is simple to navigate. A navigation bar at the bottom of the screen is your main tool for getting around. It has five key icons.

Spend some time tapping through each section to see how they work. The Home Feed is where you'll spend most of your time, scrolling through updates from people you follow.

Sharing Content

Sharing photos and videos is the core of Instagram. To create a post, tap the '+' icon at the top of the screen. You can select a photo or video from your phone's library or take a new one using the camera.

After selecting your media, you can apply filters or make edits. Then, you'll write a caption. Your caption adds context to your post. You can also include hashtags (like #travel or #food) to help people who don't follow you discover your content.

Besides regular posts, there are also Instagram Stories. These are photos and videos that disappear after 24 hours. They are meant for more casual, in-the-moment updates.

Use Instagram Stories to share daily updates, behind-the-scenes content, and announcements. The ephemeral nature of Stories creates a sense of urgency and engagement.

You can find Stories from people you follow in a bar at the top of your Home Feed. To post your own, just tap your profile picture in that same bar.

Connecting with Others

Instagram is a social network, and interacting with others is key. There are three main ways to engage:

  • Liking: If you enjoy a post, double-tap the photo or tap the heart icon below it. This is a simple way to show appreciation.
  • Commenting: Tapping the speech bubble icon lets you leave a comment. You can share your thoughts, ask a question, or tag another user.
  • Following: When you find an account you like, tap the "Follow" button on their profile. Their posts will then appear in your Home Feed.

These interactions are the foundation of building a community on the platform.
