The Myth of the Plant Brain

To understand how plants share information, we first have to completely discard our animal-centric view of communication. Plants do not have central nervous systems, synapses, or brains. In the 1880s, proposed the "root-brain" hypothesis, suggesting that the root tip acts like a simple brain. While that literal comparison did not hold up, he was entirely correct that root tips are highly active sensory hubs. Because plants cannot walk away from threat or move toward resources, their survival depends on decentralized, systemic responses. Instead of a conscious intent to "talk," plant communication is an evolutionarily optimized series of physical and biochemical feedback loops. A stressor at one leaf triggers a cascade that alters the physiology of the entire organism—and often, its neighbors.
