It is great to have you here! Jet engines are incredibly cool to learn about, and once you see the basic pattern, the whole machine starts to make a lot of sense. To kick things off, let's look at the very foundation of how these engines move: a physical law you might already be familiar with.
Every single jet engine relies on to get a massive metal airplane off the ground.
To visualize this, picture yourself standing on a skateboard holding a fully charged fire extinguisher. If you pull the trigger, a high-pressure blast of gas shoots out in front of you. What happens to you on the skateboard? You instantly start rolling backward.
The fire extinguisher shoots mass in one direction, and that action forces you in the opposite direction. A jet engine does the exact same thing, but instead of fire extinguisher chemicals, it uses air. By throwing a massive, high-speed stream of air out the back, the engine pushes the entire airplane forward. This forward-pushing force is what we call thrust.
