Who Were the Vikings?
To understand the Vikings, we have to look at where they came from. They weren't a single, unified empire with one king. Instead, they were different groups of peoples sharing a common culture, pagan religion, and language——who lived in the region we call Scandinavia.
Today, this homeland is divided into three modern countries:
- Norway: Famous for its deep, rugged fjords and mountainous terrain, which naturally pushed its people to look to the sea for survival and travel.
- Denmark: The flattest and most southern region, serving as a natural gateway connecting Scandinavia to mainland Europe.
- Sweden: Rich in forests and lakes, with coastlines that naturally directed its people's attention eastward across the Baltic Sea.

Because farmland was scarce and rugged in these northern territories, the sea became their highway, setting the stage for one of the most dynamic eras in European history.
