History of the Vikings

It is great to focus on their raids and expansions, as this is where the Viking story gets incredibly dynamic! To understand why they burst onto the scene, we first have to look at where they came from and what the word "Viking" actually meant.
Who Were the Vikings?
The lasted roughly from 793 to 1066 AD. During this era, people from Scandinavia—modern-day Denmark, Norway, and Sweden—began taking to the seas.
Crucially, "Viking" was not an ethnic label or a term for a unified nation. Back then, Scandinavia was a patchwork of independent tribes ruled by local chieftains. To the locals, viking was an activity. It was a verb. You did not inherit being a Viking; instead, you went "a-viking"—which meant embarking on an overseas expedition to raid, trade, and find adventure.
