The Birth of the Age of Reason

To understand the big picture of the , we have to look at what came before it. For centuries, European society was largely organized around absolute authority: kings ruled by divine right, and the Church was the ultimate source of truth about how the world worked. If you wanted to know why things happened—from planetary motion to human illnesses—you turned to faith, scripture, and ancient tradition. But during the late 17th century, a dramatic intellectual shift occurred. Thinkers began to argue that humanity should rely on its own reasoning and physical observation to find truth, rather than relying on blind faith. This is why the period is famously called the Age of Reason.
Think of it as a software update for the human mind. Instead of running on the old operating system of "believe because you are told to," people started running on a new system: "observe, test, and decide for yourself." This shift is known as , which is the idea that knowledge comes from our sensory experiences of the world.
