A Battle for Volume
Our story begins in the late 1920s and early 1930s, during the roaring era of and swing. Guitarists in these massive orchestras had a frustrating problem: their traditional acoustic guitars were simply too quiet. Tucked away in the rhythm section, the delicate acoustic sound was completely drowned out by blasting brass sections and driving drums. If a guitarist wanted to play a soaring solo, nobody beyond the first couple of rows could actually hear it.
To solve this, inventors began experimenting with —devices that could capture the physical vibrations of the guitar's strings and convert them into electrical signals that could be pushed through an amplifier. This sparked a sonic revolution, transforming the guitar from a quiet background timekeeper into a roaring spotlight instrument.
