The birth of modern fantasy football goes back to 1962 in a Manhattan hotel room. , a businessman and minority owner of the Oakland Raiders, gathered with a Raiders PR employee and a newspaper reporter to draft the first official rules. The following year, they launched the very first league: the (Greater Oakland Professional Pigskin Prognosticators League).

Andy Mousalimas was a charismatic Oakland tavern owner and one of the original 1963 members. In 1969, he introduced the concept to the regulars at his sports bar, the , founding the very first public fantasy football league. Bar patrons loved the competitive trash-talking and stat-tracking so much that visiting fans took the idea back to their own hometown bars across Northern California.

As word spread from bar to bar through the 1970s, organizers realized they needed standardized rules so different leagues could compete fairly. This led to the publication of the 1976 —the first commercially printed rulebook and instructional guide for running a fantasy football league.
