The World of the First Century

To understand how the Church began, we first have to look at the world into which it was born. In the first century, the was completely dominated by the Roman Empire. This geopolitical reality, while harsh, created a unique set of conditions that accidentally made the rapid spread of a new religion possible.
Three massive pillars defined this world:
  1. The Pax Romana: A long period of relative political stability and peace across the empire, which allowed people and ideas to move across borders with unprecedented ease.
  2. Roman Roads and Infrastructure: Rome built thousands of miles of paved, protected roads. These roads were designed for legions, but they were used heavily by early merchants, travelers, and eventually, the first missionaries.
  3. Greek Culture and Language: Thanks to earlier conquests, Greek was the common language of trade, philosophy, and everyday communication across the eastern empire. This meant a single message could be understood by people from Spain to Egypt without constant translation.

Jesús de Nazaret y el Origen del Mensaje

Para los historiadores, Jesús de Nazaret fue un maestro y predicador judío que vivió en la provincia romana de durante el siglo I. Su vida y su ministerio, que apenas duraron unos tres años, se desarrollaron en un ambiente de profunda tensión política y espiritual bajo la ocupación romana.
El núcleo del mensaje de Jesús no era una nueva religión organizada, sino la proclamación del Reino de Dios. Este concepto, sumamente revolucionario para la época, desafiaba tanto las estructuras religiosas tradicionales del judaísmo de ese momento como la propia autoridad absoluta de Roma, al proponer una escala de valores basada en el amor, la justicia y la igualdad, en lugar del poder militar.
