What is Germ Theory?

At its core, is simple: infectious diseases are caused by microscopic living organisms—known as —that enter the body and multiply.
These germs—like bacteria, viruses, and fungi—are far too tiny to see with the human eye, but when they settle inside us, they disrupt how our body functions.

Are all germs bad for us?

Not at all! In fact, the vast majority of germs are completely harmless to us, and many are essential to our survival.

Take your gut, for example: trillions of beneficial bacteria—often called your —help digest your food, make vital vitamins, and even keep bad germs in check. Germ theory focuses specifically on the small subset of microbes, called pathogens, that actually make us sick.

Before scientists realized these tiny organisms were causing sickness, people relied on an older idea called the —the belief that diseases were caused by poisonous 'bad air' or noxious vapors rising from rotting decay.

How did people smell their way around sickness back then?

They believed that foul, pungent odors coming from decaying filth directly infected people with illness.
Because people thought the stench itself was the poison, they focused on masking smells with sweet perfumes, burning incense, or carrying bouquets of flowers rather than washing their hands or purifying water. Since microbes are far too tiny to see with the naked eye, nobody could prove these dangerous existed until powerful microscopes were developed to reveal them.

Once scientists could finally see these tiny organisms under a lens, the stage was set for a massive revolution in science and medicine.
