What is Neuroscience?

At its core, is the scientific study of the brain and the entire nervous system. It is a massive, multi-disciplinary field that looks at how billions of biological cells interact to generate thoughts, memories, emotions, and physical movements.
To understand how this massive communication network functions, neuroscientists divide it into two main physical structures: the Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). Let's map out exactly how these two systems connect and communicate with each other.

As you can see, the physical layout of these two systems reflects their distinct roles. The Central Nervous System (CNS) serves as the body's ultimate command center. It consists solely of your brain and your spinal cord, acting as the main processor that makes sense of everything you experience. In contrast, the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) is the expansive, web-like network of nerves branching out from the spinal cord to the rest of your body. It acts as the physical communication relay, constantly carrying signals back and forth between the central command center and your limbs, skin, and organs.

The Three Great Functions

To keep you alive, moving, and reacting to the world, your nervous system continuously runs a three-step loop: gathering data, making decisions, and taking action. In neuroscience, these three core steps are formally known as , integration, and .
To see this loop in action, let's look at a concrete, everyday example: spotting a stray $100 bill on the sidewalk. First, sensory input kicks off the process. The photoreceptors in your eyes capture the light reflecting off the paper bill, translate that light into electrical impulses, and send those signals zip-lining through your peripheral nerves straight to your brain. Second, integration takes over inside the brain. Your central command center processes the visual data. It recognizes the face on the bill, compares it to past memories, realizes its value, and makes a decision: we should definitely pick that up. Third, motor output delivers the final command. Your brain sends electrical signals back down your spinal cord and out through your peripheral nerves to your leg and arm muscles, telling them to bend down and grab the cash.
