Everything around you, no matter how complex, can be simplified into a few basic 3D volumes: the cube, the sphere, and the cylinder. An apple is a sphere. A tree trunk is a cylinder. A book is a rectangular prism, a type of cube. This practice of breaking down subjects into their core components is the foundation of structural sketching. It forces you to understand an object's construction before you even think about its surface details.
