What is Psychology?

It is wonderful to have you here! Since you are eager to understand how we navigate social circles and form close bonds, we will make sure to look at every concept through the lens of relationships. Let's start right at the beginning by defining what actually is.

At its core, psychology is the scientific study of the mind and behavior.

Think of the mind as the internal computer program running in the background—it includes your private thoughts, emotions, memories, and subconscious beliefs.

Behavior, on the other hand, is the outward, physical output. It is everything we can actively observe and measure, like a smile, a sudden withdrawal from a conversation, or how closely you stand to someone you like.

To see this in action, let's take a common social scenario: falling in love.

While your mind is busy experiencing the subjective feeling of affection and swirling thoughts about another person, a psychologist can observe and measure your behavior—such as how often you look at them, how your speech patterns change, or how your heart rate spikes when they enter the room.
