Getting Started

Your First Look at Figma

Figma is a design tool that runs in your web browser. This means you don't need to install any software, and all your work is saved automatically to the cloud. It’s used by designers to create user interfaces for websites and apps, but it's a powerful tool for all sorts of visual projects.

Figma is a popular cloud-based design tool that offers a wide range of tutorials and resources for users to improve their skills.

Creating Your Account

Getting started is straightforward. Head over to Figma's website and look for the sign-up button. You can create an account using your Google credentials or any email address. After a few clicks to answer some setup questions, you'll land on your file browser, which is the main dashboard where all your projects will live.

Exploring the Workspace

When you create a new design file, you'll enter the main Figma workspace. It might look like a lot at first, but it's organized into a few key areas. The large, empty space in the middle is your canvas. This is where you'll do all your creating.

Surrounding the canvas are three important panels:

  1. The Layers Panel (Left): Every object you add to your canvas—whether it's a shape, an image, or a piece of text—will appear as a layer in this panel. It helps you keep track of all your elements and organize them.

  2. The Toolbar (Top): This is where your main tools live. You'll find everything you need to create and manipulate objects, including tools for creating shapes, drawing lines, and writing text.

  3. The Properties Panel (Right): This panel is context-sensitive. When you select an object on your canvas, this panel will show you all the properties you can change. If you select text, you can adjust the font, size, and color. If you select a shape, you can change its dimensions, fill, and stroke.

Setting Up Your First Project

From your main dashboard, you can start a new project by clicking the "New design file" button. This will open a fresh, blank canvas, ready for your ideas.

For now, just get comfortable with the space. Click on the Shape tool (the square icon) in the toolbar and draw a rectangle. Then, select the Text tool (the 'T' icon) and write something. Notice how each new item appears in the Layers Panel. Select each one and see how the Properties Panel changes to show you different options.

The best way to learn is to explore. Don't be afraid to click around and experiment with the tools. You can't break anything!
