To understand how the brain operates, we first have to look at its role as the ultimate boss of your body. Your brain, along with your spinal cord, forms what scientists call the (CNS). Think of the CNS as a massive, high-speed biological computer. The spinal cord acts like a main fiber-optic cable running down your back, while the brain sits at the top as the master CPU, processing every single thing you experience.
Every movement you make, every memory you recall, and even automatic things like your heartbeat are constantly managed right here.

The Big Three Divisions

To picture how your brain is organized, think of it as a historic tree. At the very top, blooming out like a massive, wrinkled canopy, is the . It is the largest division of the brain, making up about 85% of its total weight. This canopy is where your conscious mind lives. It handles your thoughts, memories, emotions, and decision-making, while also translating everything you see, hear, and feel into a conscious experience. Tucked neatly under the back of this canopy is the . This structure looks like a miniature, highly folded brain of its own—which is fitting, because its name actually means "little brain" in Latin. The cerebellum acts as your body's silent autopilot. When you write your name, ride a bike, or walk without stumbling, it is your cerebellum working behind the scenes to coordinate those precise, fluid muscle movements. Finally, supporting everything from beneath is the . Acting like the sturdy trunk of the tree, it connects the upper brain directly to the spinal cord. It handles the critical, automatic functions that keep you alive without you ever having to think about them—such as your breathing, heart rate, and digestion.
