What is a Star?

Imagine holding a giant, glowing beach ball that is so hot it shines with its own light. That is actually what a is! In real life, stars are not flat shapes with five points like the ones we draw on paper. They are actually giant, round balls of super-hot, glowing gas floating in deep space.

What kind of gas are they made of?

Stars are actually giant factories made almost entirely of two super-light gases: and . These are the two most common gases in the entire universe! Inside the star, they get squeezed together so tightly that they generate massive amounts of light and heat.

Why are these gases so common?

That is an excellent question! In the early universe, hydrogen and helium were basically the only elements around because they are the absolute simplest and lightest ingredients to make.

Now that we know what stars are made of, we can look at how they live! Just like people, stars have a life cycle: they are born, they grow up, and they eventually run out of fuel and .

Before we look at how stars die, we should talk about how they are born in the first place. Every single star starts out inside a giant, swirling cloud of space dust and gas called a .

What path will our Sun take?

That is a super important question! Our Sun actually has a very calm retirement plan. Because it is a medium-sized, average star, it does not have enough weight to collapse into a when it dies.
Instead of exploding, the Sun will slowly swell up into a giant red ball, gently blow off its outer gas layers into space, and shrink down into a tiny, glowing leftover called a . It is like a glowing coal left behind after a campfire goes out.

Now that we know how average stars like our Sun live and fade away, we are ready to explore the much more dramatic lives of giant stars! Let's take a look at what happens when massive stars run out of energy and explode.
