  1. For Acid Spills (e.g., Vinegar, Lemon Juice): Sprinkle a little baking soda over the spill first. You will see it slightly—that is a neutralisation reaction turning the acid into harmless salty water and carbon dioxide gas. Once the fizzing stops, wipe it up with a damp paper towel.

  2. For Base Spills (e.g., Soap, Baking Soda Solution): Wipe these up directly with plenty of water. Bases can be slippery, so a quick wipe with a diluted splash of vinegar can help cut through the slickness before you do a final wipe with water.

  3. The Trash Rule: Always throw cleanup paper towels directly into the household trash, and wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water after cleaning up.

Let's jump right into the colorful world of acids and bases. To do this, we are going to use a brilliant natural that you can find right in the produce aisle: a red cabbage. This vegetable contains a special pigment that changes its structure—and its color—depending on whether it is mixed with an acid or a base. Let's start with how to extract this magic color-changing juice.

Extracting the Cabbage Juice

To get our indicator ready, we need to extract the deep purple pigment, called , from the cabbage leaves. It is incredibly easy to do with hot water:
  1. Chop: Have your seventh grader safely tear or chop three or four red cabbage leaves into small pieces.
  2. Steep: Place the pieces in a heatproof container or bottle, and pour hot tap water over them until they are just submerged.
  3. Extract: Let it sit for about ten minutes, shaking or stirring occasionally. You'll watch the water turn a deep, beautiful purple.
  4. Strain: Strain the purple liquid into a clean jar or cup, discarding the leftover cabbage pieces.
