I teach physical education for adults

Welcome! I'm really looking forward to diving into this. Teaching physical education to adults is incredibly rewarding, but it definitely requires a different playbook than teaching kids.

Before we map out our journey, I'd love to know a bit more about the specific group of adults you work with. This will help me tailor all our practical strategies directly to your day-to-day teaching.

Andragogy vs. Pedagogy in Motion

To design a physical education class that truly resonates with adults, we first have to unpack how they learn differently than kids. In educational theory, teaching children is called pedagogy, while the art and science of helping adults learn is known as . Introduced to a wider audience by educator Malcolm Knowles, this framework completely shifts the dynamic in your gymnasium or studio.
While children are often comfortable simply following instructions because 'the teacher said so,' adults require a different approach. Because of this, effective adult physical education relies on four core shifts in how you present your classes:
  1. The "Why" Matters: Children will play a tag game just for the fun of it. Adults, however, need to understand the purpose behind an exercise—such as how a specific movement pattern improves balance to prevent everyday slips.
  2. Leveraging Experience: Your community class is full of life history. One adult might have played high school basketball, while another might be managing a chronic knee injury. Acknowledging this lived experience makes them feel respected.
  3. Self-Direction: Adults prefer having autonomy. Offering structured choices (such as different progression levels or implement weights) allows them to direct their own physical journey.
  4. Immediate Relevance: Adults are highly problem-centered. They want to know how today's session helps them carry groceries, play with grandkids, or reduce stress after a long workday.
