What Is an Ecosystem?
An ecosystem is a community of living organisms interacting with their non-living environment. Think of a forest. The trees, animals, and insects are the living parts. The sunlight, soil, and rain are the non-living parts. Together, they form a complex, interconnected system. Ecosystems can be vast, like an entire ocean, or as small as a puddle of water.
The Living Parts
The living, or biotic, components of an ecosystem can be sorted into three main roles based on how they get energy.
Producer
noun
An organism that produces its own food, typically through photosynthesis. They form the base of the food web.
Producers, also called autotrophs, create their own energy. Most use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into sugar through photosynthesis. Plants, algae, and some bacteria are all producers. They are the foundation of nearly every ecosystem on Earth.
Consumer
noun
An organism that obtains energy by feeding on other organisms.
Consumers, or heterotrophs, can't make their own food, so they eat other organisms. Herbivores, like deer, eat plants. Carnivores, like wolves, eat other animals. Omnivores, like bears, eat both plants and animals. Humans are omnivores, too.
Decomposer

An organism that breaks down dead organic material, returning essential nutrients to the environment.
Decomposers are nature’s cleanup crew. Organisms like bacteria and fungi break down dead plants and animals. This process is essential because it releases nutrients from the dead organic matter back into the soil and water, where producers can use them again.
The Non-Living Parts
The non-living, or abiotic, components provide the conditions and resources necessary for life. They are the physical and chemical factors that influence the organisms in an ecosystem.
Key abiotic factors include:
- Sunlight: The primary source of energy for most ecosystems.
- Water: Essential for all life processes.
- Soil: Provides nutrients, water, and a place for plants to anchor their roots.
- Temperature: Affects the metabolic rates of organisms and determines which species can survive in an area.
A desert and a rainforest have very different biotic communities precisely because their abiotic factors—like water and temperature—are so different.
Energy Flow and Nutrient Cycling
Two fundamental processes govern how ecosystems function: the flow of energy and the cycling of nutrients.
Energy flows through an ecosystem in one direction. It starts with the sun, is captured by producers, and is then transferred to consumers when they eat the producers. At each step, a significant amount of energy is lost as heat. This is why there are typically fewer organisms at higher levels of the food chain.
Unlike energy, nutrients are cycled within an ecosystem. They aren't lost; they just change form and location. When a plant or animal dies, decomposers go to work. They break down the complex organic matter and return simple nutrients to the soil and water. These nutrients are then ready to be taken up by producers, starting the cycle all over again. This constant recycling ensures that the essential building blocks of life remain available.
