The Core of Economics: Dealing with Scarcity

At its absolute heart, economics is not actually about money, stock markets, or banks. Instead, it is the study of and choice. We live in a world where our desires and wants are virtually limitless. We want better healthcare, cleaner energy, newer technology, and longer vacations. However, the resources we have to satisfy these desires—such as time, land, raw materials, and labor—are strictly limited.
Because we cannot have everything we want, we have to make decisions. Every choice we make means giving up something else. Economics is simply the social science that analyzes how individuals, businesses, and governments make these difficult decisions to allocate their limited resources.
