A balance sheet is a snapshot of a company's financial health at a single moment in time. It answers two basic questions: What does the company own, and what does it owe? By laying everything out, it gives a clear picture of a business's value.
The balance sheet provides a snapshot of what a company owns and owes at a specific point in time, presenting assets, liabilities, and shareholders' equity as its principal characters.
Think of it like taking a financial photograph. It doesn't show performance over a month or a year—that's what other financial statements do. Instead, it captures the company's financial position on the exact day the report is dated. Everything is organized into three core categories that must always balance out.
What You Own (Assets)
Assets are all the valuable things a company owns that can provide future economic benefit. This includes everything from cash in the bank to the computers employees use. Assets are usually split into two types based on how quickly they can be converted into cash.
