Putting it Together: Playing Simple Songs

To start, let's look at the piano itself. If you look at the keys, you will notice they aren't just a random line of black and white. The are actually arranged in a repeating pattern of clusters: groups of two, then groups of three, then two, then three.

Take a look at the interactive keyboard above. Do you see how the highlighted keys form a group of two on the left, and a group of three on the right? Finding these groups is your map for the entire piano.

You've got it! Let's shift our focus to finding a specific white key on the piano, using our black key map.

Every white key has a simple letter name from the , which only goes from A to G before repeating. Instead of guessing, we can find the note C by using the group of two black keys. It is always the white key directly to the left of any two-black-key cluster.

Now that you know how to find C using the two black keys, we can easily find every other note. Let's look at the actual mapped right onto the keys, starting from our anchor point, C.
