Understanding the Molecular Blueprint

Why do A only pair with T, and C with G?
It all comes down to chemical shape and size, working like puzzle pieces that only fit together in one specific way.
At the molecular level, the DNA bases pair up via —weak electrical attractions between slightly positive hydrogen atoms and slightly negative nitrogen or oxygen atoms on the opposing bases.

As you can see, the physical geometry determines the match. Adenine and thymine have the perfect distance and atomic setup to form exactly two hydrogen bonds, while cytosine and guanine shape themselves to form exactly three.
If adenine tried to pair with cytosine, the electrical charges wouldn't line up and the physical spacing would bulge, making the double helix unstable.
