Your First Greek Words
To kick off our journey into Greetings and Introductions, let's look at the absolute foundation of any conversation: saying hello. In Greek, we have two primary ways to greet people, and choosing the right one depends entirely on who you are talking to.
First, we have the informal greeting used with friends, family, children, or people you know well:
Γεια σου (pronounced YAH soo)
Think of this as a warm, friendly "hi" or "hello" to a single person.
But what if you are checking into a hotel, ordering food from a server, or addressing a group of people? For those moments, you want to show a little extra respect. In Greek, we do this by using the plural or formal greeting:
Γεια σας (pronounced YAH sas)
